Pharmacy Technician & Pharmacist Continuing Education

Being a pharmacy technician or a pharmacist requires you to constantly update your knowledge and skills which can only happen with continuing education. Moreover, it is also a requirement prescribed by the State Boards of Pharmacy and certifying boards like the PTCB. Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why is Continuing Education Required?

Pharmacy Technician: A pharmacy technician professional is required to undertake a structured educational activity to meet the state licensure requirement and/or maintain their PTCB and NHA certification. The continuing education program can be taken either online or in-person.

Pharmacist: Continuing education for a pharmacist is an ACPE accredited post-licensure pharmacy education designed to maintain professional competence. Continuing education is required to maintain pharmacist licensure and there are several programs that are offered online, in-print, in-person or via recording.

2. Apart from being a requirement how does Continuing Education Help?

Apart from being a requirement, continuing education keeps a pharmacy technician, or a pharmacist updated and current with relevant knowledge and skills, thereby protecting the health and welfare of the citizens of the state.

3. How many hours of Continuing Education do I need?

Pharmacy Technician: PTCB and NHA certified pharmacy technicians require completing 20 hours of pharmacy technician specific continuing education during each two-year recertification cycle, out of which 1 hour each must be in the subject of Pharmacy Law and Patient Safety. Conversely if certification is not a mandate in your state, you must fulfill the continuing education requirements, if any, prescribed by your state board of pharmacy.

Pharmacist: For pharmacists the continuing education hours vary from state to state. Most states require 30 hours of continuing education during a two-year period out of which 3 hours must be in a live setting.

4. Who is eligible for continuing education?

Pharmacy Technician: Pharmacy technicians who have passed the certification exam and have an active PTCB/NHA certification and/or are licensed by the state board of pharmacy are eligible for continuing education.

Pharmacist: Pharmacists who have passed the NAPLEX and are holding an active licensure from their state board of pharmacy are eligible for continuing education.

5. Where can I obtain continuing education Credits?

You can obtain your continuing education credits from an ACPE accredited provider. It can either be an institution, organization or agency that offers continuing education programs in compliance with ACPE�s policies and procedures.

6. How do I know if the continuing education provider is ACPE accredited?

To know if the continuing education provider is accredited you must look out for the ACPE logo and program number on the provider�s program information brochure.

7. How do I know if a Continuing Education program is for or pharmacist or pharmacy technician?

Continuing education programs meant for pharmacists come with a designated �P� and programs for pharmacy technicians with a �T.� If the program is offered for both it will come with a �P� and �T.�

8. What types of activities can be used towards completion of continuing education credits?

Activities can be broadly categorized into three kinds, namely; Knowledge based, Application based and Practice-based. The minimum amount of credit for knowledge-based activities is 0.25 contact hours, for application based it is one contact hour and 15 contact hours for practice-based activities. You can decide to take the best combination of activities that suit you practice needs, as you are not necessarily required to undertake all three at once.

9. How do I document my continuing education?

Pharmacy Technician: Most continuing education providers process the continuing education credits. You can view your CPE Monitor profile to check if your credits have been added by your provider. Pharmacy technicians certified by PTCB are required to maintain their own records as the CPE Monitor is not available for technicians as of now. You must maintain these records for at least one year after the certification cycle ends in either a transcript or a grade report.

Pharmacist: The documentation of your continuing education activity can be done by using the CPE Monitor that is a collaborative service from ACPE and NABP. You can access this feature by setting your profile on the NABP website. You must allow your continuing education provider up to 60 days to report and upload your activity to your profile.

PTCB Continuing Education Requirements

A PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technician is required to complete 20 hours of continuing education every 2 years. It is mandatory upon you to fulfil this requirement to keep your certification active and even renew your licensure. Again, you must know that some state boards have their specific requirements which you must fulfil along with the PTCB to remain licensed.

Look at these quick pointers below to know about the PTCB Continuing Education Requirements in a snapshot:

� 20 hours of continuing education every 2 years.
� You must complete your continuing education program offered by an ACPE/ASHP provider.
� CE programs offered by ACPE providers, designated as �T� are to be opted for.
� 1 contact hour is equal to 0.1 CEU
� 1 hour out of the 20 hours must be in the subject of pharmacy law.
� Another 1 hour must be in the subject of patient safety.
� 18 hours must be earned in any combination of subjects such as medication or drug distribution, inventory control systems, mathematics and calculations, biology, pharmaceutical sciences, therapeutic issues, pharmacy operations, pharmacology, drug therapy or drug products, preparation of sterile products, prescription compounding, immunizations, HIV/AIDS therapy related courses, drug repackaging and efficient patient interaction.
� You must keep the records of continuing education hours earned for at least 1 year after the certification cycle ends.

ExCPT Continuing Education Requirements

The NHA certification requires you to stay current with your knowledge and skills. During each 2 year certification cycle, you are required to complete and submit appropriate documentation as evidence of completion of 20 hours of continuing education.
